On Monday, 28 March 2005, AntiPolygraph.org released the 4th edition of The Lie Behind the Lie Detector.

The main changes appear in Chapter 4, which is on polygraph countermeasures:

  • The number of breathing reactions suggested for countermeasure purposes has been reduced from 12 to 5, based on new information about DoDPI's scoring practices (p. 145).

  • The anal sphincter contraction has been dropped as a recommended physical countermeasure (p. 149). As explained in the book, although no polygrapher has demonstrated the ability to detect an anal sphincter contraction applied as a countermeasure, we do not know for a fact that the piezoelectric sensor pads now being marketed by such polygraph manufacturers as Lafayette and Axciton cannot assist in detecting this countermeasure. Considering the ready availability of other countermeasures that such pads clearly can't detect (mental/cognitive countermeasures and tongue-biting), it seems prudent to use one of these instead.

  • A subchapter on polygraph counter-countermeasures has been added (p. 157). Techniques mentioned have previously been discussed in the message board thread, Counter-countermeasure Techniques.
Chapters 1 and 2 and virtually unchanged. A note about the DoDPI Law Enforcement Pre-Employment Test (LEPET) has been added to Chapter 3 (p. 115). In Chapter 5, contact information for various federal agencies has been updated, and a new appendix (A) on the LEPET has been inserted (p. 175).
