Seeking advice on a background interview

I was planning on applying to a police department within the next few months and I have a concern with my background that I would like some advice about.  About 10 years ago, I had a one night stand with a girl when we were both drunk.  The relation was consensual between both of us. The next day she accused me of sexual assault. I was visiting a friend out of town when this happened and it was at a house party that was thrown.  I don't know her reasons behind the accusation and I confronted her about it at which time it turned into a heated discussion and we parted our separate ways. About a week later I was called by an investigator and asked to come into my local PD for an interview about the situation.  We sat down and he started a tape recorder and read me my rights.  At that time I figured it would be best to seek out a lawyer.  I did and after telling the lawyer the situation he advised me to call the investigator and inform him that I am not going to say anything unless I have a lawyer present.  I did that and they said ok and I never heard anything from them again.  I didn't have my picture or my prints taken but I'm sure this investigation still exists somewhere in their files.  Should I continue my application to the PD or is this situation going to look bad for me if/when I do?  I'm fully prepared to explain the situation in the interview when it comes up (which it surely will). The only thing I am guilty of is using bad judgment when it came to a casual sexual encounter but unfortunately it is my word against hers. I did not need to seek legal council after this because as far as I know the investigation was dropped (although nobody informed me of this).  I never actually hired the lawyer (my father and I went to him and his advice was the "free initial consultation"). If I apply to the PD will they restart an investigation and will I once again have the same emotional headaches and have to seek legal council?  Does anybody know what will happen in a situation such as this?  I know this is a site about polygraphy but I saw this section in the forum on police hiring procedures and thought I'd try to get some advice here (perhaps by a police officer or somebody who might have had something happen like this). Any info would be greatly appreciated.  Although a career in law enforcement is something I've always wanted, I just don't know if I should bother at all.
