Question

My eyesight is a little worse than 20/200.  I am currently preparing for the phase II FBI exam and was thinking about having Lasik eye surgery.  Does anyone know if this will affect my application?  I know the website says that I have to wait a year, but does that still apply if you are moving onto Phase II.  Furthermore my eye doctor said that recent advancements in Lasik surgery leave very little scar tissue and that the tissue certification required by the FBI is archaic?  Does anyone have any advice?

Hey,
I would not tell them you had any problems with your eyes right now because you would just stop your application process where it is.  I would wait until you reached your medical exam and let them know then.  Once you pass your phase II, the process goes really quick.  A couple of weeks isn't going to make a difference when it comes to getting the operation.
Good luck on the interview...and better luck with the poly!
hope this helps...

Shafted What kind of screwed up advise are you giving this poor guy? If the rules state he must wait a year that is what he must do. If he gets to the medical exam, they will exam his eyes and see the scar tissue (and they will). He will still have to wait a year and then he may be looked a as a integrity violation, as he was to notify the FBI of the surgery at the time of application.  Don't jerk these recruiters around as you  are on a sure fire route to never getting hired with FBI, if you play games.  ???

Friend is probaly correct. Don't jerk them around. Just play dead and be jerked around by them. They only allow themselves to play games. Apparently they enjoy playing "head" games.

I'm sorry for the confusion...Don't get the Lasik until you get nabbed in the medical.  If you get the lasik before phase II, they will stop your processing right then and there and make you wait a year.  At least wait to get the Lasik after Phase II and inform them then.  I am a causious optimist...I would have been pissed if I dropped a load of cash on my eyes and failed the phase II or the poly.  As it is now....I didn't get the surgery and I failed the poly.....saved me 4 grand....
I would have rather spent the 4 grand and passed the poly though  ;D

Just completed Phase 1 testing.

LASIK surgery is now a SIX MONTH delay, not a 1 YEAR delay.

The FBI has changed the rule.

I just spoke to an FBI recruiter about this very issue less than a week ago when she called me to schedule my Phase II interview.  I do not meet the minimum uncorrected vision requirement (nor am I close).  I do meet the corrected vision requirement w/ contacts.  She told me to forego any surgery because the FBI is about to change these guidelines.  She wasnt real sure regarding the specifics but she thought that they were going to allow contact wearers of one year or longer with no complications to continue with the hiring process.  I certainly hope she was right.

Does PRK fall under these same guidelines?  I have my phase II in a week and a half, and I had PRK two years ago.  MY vision in both states is well acceptable, but they have no rules against it, do they?  Thanks.
