what if, in your stupidity, you truly confess to having done something wrong?

Suppose that your brain is not working the day of the polygraph examination and you allow the examiner to make you confess to something that you actually did wrong. Assuming that you were never caught/punished and unless your confession involves a serious crime, are you likely to get in trouble right away?
