Failed FBI Poly - does this affect background checks for non-law enforcement positions?

Hi all,
I applied to the FBI straight out of college and got through to the polygraph phase where I failed. I was accused of committing serious crimes and using/dealing drugs - all of which I have never done. That said - once I found out I failed the polygraph, I did not appeal it. I decided I would pursue other job opportunities.

My main concern is - does failing a polygraph affect future "background checks" conducted by employers? I do not plan or want to work for any government or law enforcement positions so I am not seeking a security clearance. I just worry that employers who do background checks will see I have a completely clean criminal record AND that I failed a FBI polygraph. Is the fact that I failed a polygraph accessible to non-government, non-law enforcement positions?

Also - should I do any follow up on my file with the FBI? Again, I don't plan on pursuing any opportunities in the future with them, but think having a letter on file from me stating I believe the polygraph was wrong would be a good idea. Thoughts?

Many thanks!

No.

It wouldn't hurt. A good start would be to file a Privacy Act request for your FBI file and see whether--apart from the erroneous results--anything you said to your polygrapher was misrepresented in his/her report so that you can challenge it.

Thank you very much!

I'm going to request my file and go through it and then file a letter to be added to my file.

Thanks again!
