Commissioner Johnson is to be commended. Taking a rational stance on polygraphy requires courage in the post 9-11 world. Although many people mistakenly equate polygraphs with security, readers of this site know that these "tests" falsely accuse as many as 50% of truthful individuals while deceptive individuals can easily pass via simple countermeasures.

In the past 18 months, AntiPolygraph.org received numerous complaints about the abusive behavior of Philadelphia Police polygraphers toward applicants. Many applicants described being ushered into small room that was intentionally overheated via the use of a space heater to supplement the already substantial heat in the building. Fortunately, it appears that the "Philly Hot Box" is no more.

Whether you're a thief or not is irrelevant to the issue, as polygraphs cannot detect lies about thievery much less anything else. The process itself is bankrupt, therefore gleefully exulting in the fact that polygraphs have been banned from the hiring process so that you, an admitted thief (at least for the purposes of your juvenile post) might be hired is also irrelevant. If the background investigation doesn't uncover your prior transgressions the crucible of being placed in a position of trust surely will. Daily readers of newspapers can clearly see that police officers (and prosecutors and judges) are routinely arrested and convicted for crimes such as drunk driving, drugged driving, hit and run, rape, drug dealing, arson, car theft, burglery, armed robbery, assault and murder-- including cop-killings. Did the polygraph catch any of them? Nope.
