I was just reading through some posts at the polyplace board.  An examiner posting there states that Oregon law prohibits polygraph screening for law enforcement positions.  Is anyone able to confirm this information?

I do know that both Minnesota and New Jersey prohibit polygraph screening for employment altogether.  However, this is the first I have heard of Oregon's prohibition.  If so...   :D

Brandon,

That's correct. Pre-employment polygraph screening for law enforcement positions is prohibited by law in Oregon. In addition to Minnesota and New Jersey, Michigan and Massachusetts have also banned it.

That's great!  Do you know how long ago these bans where put in place?  Any "ammunition" to use on state legislators could only be helpful, especially if any of these bans are recent.  If it takes one state at a time to "shut-down" polygraphy, so be it.

Brandon,

I don't know precisely when these antipolygraph laws went into effect, but all were enacted before AntiPolygraph.org went on-line in 2000. These five states get along just fine without pre-employment polygraph screening, and there is no reason the others can't, too. In addition, none of the democracies of Western Europe use pre-employment polygraph screening.

See the text of Minnesota's antipolygraph statute included in The Lie Behind the Lie Detector. It provides a good model for other states to follow.

Thank you. I have reviewed Minnesota's statute and agree that it is a good model.  I'll do some research on the other states mentioned.
