Anal Squeeze Changes Breathing?

Here's my question: It seemed to me that doing a strong anal sphincter squeeze produces changes in my breathing rate anyway, so that trying to do a breathing CM seemed redundant. Does that make sense? It's just easier if you only have one CM you're trying to concentrate on.

So, do you all find that the breathing changes brought on naturally by using a sphincter squeeze are "good enough" to register on the charts?

For reasons discussed at p. 149 of the 4th edition of The Lie Behind the Lie Detector, AntiPolygraph.org no longer recommends the anal sphincter contraction as a physical countermeasure. Rather, we suggest using either 1) mental (cognitive) countermeasures, such as thinking exciting or frightening thoughts, or performing mental arithmetic, or 2) tongue-biting. As you observed with regard to the anal sphincter contraction, either of these may also very well result in an associated, scorable breathing reaction without your having to concentrate on it.

Thanks for your reply. I read your book about a year ago and it has proved to be invaluable.

I've found that using a sphincter contraction works best for me all the way around. I know that some polygraphers out there are using those pads, but all of the polygraphers I've encountered have used plain, metal chairs that are horribly uncomfortable. There were no sensors anywhere.

So I'll think I stick with what works for me as long as I don't see any pads. :-)

Just wanted to note that I'm a valid, law-abiding citizen who's been absolutely screwed by the "system." I am not, however, going to wallow in self pity. I plan on using my knowledge about the polygraph, and about the system at large, and using it to help people going through similar struggles.

did not need to use any counter-measures.  The chair I was in did not have any pads..had two wide arms that I rested my arms on for the cuff...he made sure I knew when the cuff would start to rise...he treated me with respect, and I reciprocated.

What kind of agency issued the polygraph you failed?

Did you fail because:
1) You made a substantial admission
2) You lied and the machine 'caught you'
3) You told the truth and the machine failed to register you as 'truthful'

It was for the FBI  I was truthful and the machine failed to register it as truthful.  Then I was subjected to an after test interview to try to get me to admit something that has never even happened!!

i am sorry...that is so sucky
I had such a great polygrapher...and it also helped I believe to have a great background detective who believes in me..no inconsistencies anywhere in my file or in medical file..
