Polygraph Questions

Why would a polygraph examiner ask a candidate to answer a mathematical question in the pre-test? What are they trying to gauge?

I am no expert, but from what I have read it would appear that he is trying to benchmark the reaction to a common countermeasure.

what should you do in this case? do you employ counter measure?
