First you want to try and beat a polygraph.  Now you want to beat a personality test - WTF?  That just scares the hell out of me.  BTW doesn't that material have a copywrite?  I guess that wouldn't matter anyway since you probably don't know which personality typed it!  dumb azz!   Roll Eyes

Anyone who tries to cheat on a personality test indicates a level of psycopathy that can't be hidden for long Dragon Lady. His lie scales and all other MMPI "built-ins" will reveal this character's.....well, character. He/She would be better off taking the damn test and marking positively on the questions like---"do you think you deserve special treatment due to your depth of intellect?"--and other similar narcissistic indicators. All cops get a "10% discount" regarding the laws that they themselves enforce----where as this cat, according to his goals of circumnavigating a personality test, reveals him/her to be one who will take a 90% discount. Those types of cops get fired within 5 years for rape, stealing, falsifying records, DUI----you name it, they F up and F up big time. Fortunately, attempting to cheat on the MMPI is a great comedy of errors, and poster named "MMPI" is the big clown on the little stage.

The voices in your head tell you what to do, obviously.

"Although the degree of reliability of polygraph evidence may depend upon a variety of identifiable factors, there is simply no way to know in a particular case whether a polygraph examiner's Conclusion is accurate, because certain doubts and uncertainties plague even the best polygraph exams."  (Justice Clarence Thomas writing in United States v. Scheffer, 523 U.S. 303, 118 S.Ct. 1261, 140 L.Ed.2d 413, 1998.)

I am curious why so many people think that they have so much to hide, or are so pathological, that they would need to purposefully attempt to distort results.  I am also curious how they think this will go undetected by the examiner.

psych1,

because this site, it's promoters and supporters have no belief in any testing or process that is not scientifically supported by the entire related community, to be absolutely factual and accurate, based on deeply researched and peer reviewed studies which allow for no mistakes, no distortions or any possible contamination and most of all no potential for false results in any way shape or form at any level of finding.

I think that leaves mathematics!  All else, they feel cheating is the only way to succeed.

Lol...well I am aware of nothing except a standard ruler or yard stick that can reach that scientific standard. Statistically, that criteria is just unrealistic. If someone can propose a statistically stronger model for assessment or prediction, Id be happy to hear it.

This posting regards the MMPI-2 for assessment of psychological functioning.  Not use of polygraph which is a different issue.

The MMPI-2's psychometric properties, utility in assessing psychopathology, as well as its ability to discriminate genuine vs feigned psychological impairment (or normality) is well supported by many scientific and peer reviewed academic articles over a 50 year period. I am curious how one "cheats" on the MMPI? Hence, why the literature on analogue and "coached" faking of MMPI profiles would suggest that this is quite the futile effort. And actually, the MMPI-2 is very much grounded in mathematics and statistics, but is never interpreted blindly, without taking into consideration the factors of the individual through an interview.

I think what people are not understanding is that the base rate occurrence of "false-positive" scale elevation of any significant magnitude on the MMPI is so small to begin with. It takes an aggregate amount of deviant responses throughout the test to elevate scales to an alarming level. In other words, statistics are really working against the notion of the random chance of false-positive, and should calm in undue paranoia people have about this. This is why people shouldn't complain about the length of the test. It works to your advantage in terms of potential for "false-positive" or "false-negative" scale elevation.  The more items, the less amount of random error variance introduced into the equation. I guess I'm just not understanding what the objection is here, unless one is pathologically paranoid or has something to hide?

I would emplore anyone to be honest when taking the MMPI-2. Please think about this from the clinician's (psychologist's) perspective. A slight elevation on many of the clinical scales are not necessarily a contraindication for the job. The MMPI measures many constructs.  I really don't care if you happen to be a bit hypochondriacal, or have dysphoric tendencies. Even mild anxiety disorders. If the problem is well controlled, or mild, and/or unlikely to affect job performance, it not a big deal. However, when they see elevated validity scales that demonstrate attempts to underreport or "fake-good," at the very least, it suggests deceitful behavior and a standard of ethics that is contraindicated in a law enforcement officer. Further, it opens up the window of suspicion on what factors might underly the motivation to deceive. Paranoia? Significant Psych issues/history? What else might the candidate be lying about or covering up?
