Our student research group at the university is doing a paper/presentation on several aspects of polygraph exams as used in the private sector. The title I have entered is just one of the topics so far. Our basic research shows this as a high dollar revenue exam as men and women are often seeking a quick answer, and willing to pay anything in some instances.
Our research also shows a large number of polygraph examiners are in this Relationship Polygraph market, especially in CA, NY/NJ/CT, FL, GA, LA as a few places we have gathered data from. In addition we have downloaded the book by GM, however we a seeking information from people with extensive polygraph knowledge. What we are looking from in terms of response from those who regular post on AP is the following:
1. Are Relationship Polygraphs accurate?
2. What type of Polygraph Technique should be used, as we have seen all kinds used.
3. Everyone talks about countermeasures and when we interviewed examiners in FL, GA and CA they all said that there was no such thing as countermeasures. Is that an accurate statement?
4. Does a persons health really factor in. We were told that examiners were NOT concerned with high blood pressure, heart murmurs, pacemakers, anxiety or panic disorders. We were told these are factored in as part of the exam and he or she, the examiner can compensate for it. The only thing they ALL disagreed on was doing an exam on a pregnant woman.
5. What is the fallout or damage that can occur as a result of doing these exams as far as the examinee and persons involved?
6. Is the polygraph examiner in danger of physical harm in doing an exam that has a result that is not agreed by either or both parties?
7. Can the polygraph examiner be sued for arriving at the wrong conclusion.?
8. Is it of value to get a 2nd polygraph examination conducted as to validate or refute the 1st test?
9. As a basic qualifier should an examiner doing this exams be a member of the APA and his/her state association. Many of our responses of a negative nature were from examinees that went to a person that was NOT a member. When contacting state associations they said they check out the potential member or expel those people that have negative activity in his her past. This includes arrest, non APA trained, fired from a police or expelled from military, and other reasons that seen to protect the public.
10. Does civil courts in cases of divorce and child custody issues accept the results of a polygraph examination?
We would appreciate people replying stating his/her professional credentials to include college degrees, police or probation officer experience, and other factors. Since many people visit this site we are looking for responses from qualified examiners. Thank you.
