Knowledge of what I was facing and overcoming the fear of the unknown is what got me through the polygraph test I took last week. I read TLBTLD from cover to cover and focused on my breathing, dressed appropriately, made eye contact with the examiner and used mental thoughts when needed.
For me the biggest thing was being able to "project" myself to a happy place in my mind and maintain my breathing when answering relevant questions. When a control question came up and I was entirely sure it was a control question, I exhaled a bit slower, swallowed and increased my breathing rate enough so that it was elevated slightly for 5 - 10 seconds. Then, I slowly returned back to my breathing pattern.
Four weeks prior to my test, I practiced my breathing through meditation and then once I got the patterns down, I put myself in distracting situations so I could "practice under pressure".
From my experience the key thing is to not show any fear.
Good for you buddy. You are right to focus on overcoming the fear that is the central tool used by the polygraph examiner. Once you see the man behind the curtain, fear leaves you and you realize that they have no power over you.
