First off..this is a pretty cool site. I have learned so much here aboutwhat polygraph is all about. I have a friend who will be taking a polygraph for poaching deer of all things. Any ideas on how to deal with this area specificaly?

well, did he actually poach the deer?
I'm not sure...I don't think he would...he's a real avid hunter and outdoorsman. I guess that doesn't mean anything to the cops though.
forget the cops (and the polygraph). Your friend needs a lawyer (which I'm not). I would advise against taking any polygraph; especially over something like this.
In most free democratic countries, the police need evidence to convict somebody. If the police had evidence (i.e. a dead deer in your friend's freezer) then they wouldn't be asking him to take a polygraph. Not sure which country you are in and if the above applies, so don't construe it as legal advice.

Hopefully your friend plays by the rules. As a hunter, I would not hesitate to report any illegal activity to Operation Game Thief. Please note that I am not accusing your friend of anything. The questions that I am sure the authorities have already asked would be: Were there any witnesses? Is there ballistic evidence? Does he have a freezer full of meat? Did he go see the butcher with a deer out-of-season? Is there a fresh carcass or head in his possession?
My advice would be to skip the poly. My guess is that actual evidentiary proof of your friend's involvement in this unlawful harvest is absent, thus the polygraph request by the authorities.
But if he did it, I hope he loses his weapon, vehicle and any other gear used.

I think your friend would be wise to refuse the polygraph. Before he decides to go through with it, he may wish to read Chapters 1 and 3 of The Lie Behind the Lie Detector (http://antipolygraph.org/lie-behind-the-lie-detector.pdf), which deal with polygraph validity and procedure, respectively.
I talked to him more about it. Apparently, he didn't poach the deer himself but he knows who did and is thinking of turning them in to save himself. An older friend of his. I also told him not to take the poly...we'll see if he listens. Thanks everyone for the help.
Your friend should turn him in through Operation Game Thief if it is available. There is the possibility of monetary reward.
