Title: HELP  What does this mean????
Post by: j richards on May 24, 2003, 03:17 AM
My spouse took a polygraph 2 weeks ago.  3 questions were asked, and test run 3 times.  2 of the questions showed I told the truth.  Polygraph showed me the chart and on those 2 passing questions the graph looked all even no spikes same with other stuff, blood pressure etc.

Now, on the 1 question, there was just a slight or so slight rise, hardly even noticeable unless you looked really close, on graph and in blood pressure etc.  Spouse said they they don't care....they told the truth.
Polygrapher said maybe your spouse was untruthful OR not sure of something.

Question was:  "During your entire marriage did you have sexual contact with any other girls besides your wife and the girls she already knows about?"  This question was asked in different positions 3 times and all three times showed exactly the same results.

QUESTIONS:  Does the degree of the spikes show the degree of deception? Such as a small hardly noticeable spike(not really a spike just a tiny rise) mean the test subject was worried about something he might have forgotten and not lying?  OR could it mean he was straight out lying and there were more girls??

Thanks for help  I have no one to ask this question.

J. Richards,

The "test" results are meaningless: polygraph "testing" has no scientific basis whatsoever. It doesn't detect lies. It doesn't detect deception. It's a fraud.

For more on the scientific status of polygraphy, and to learn about the trickery and simplistic assumptions on which it depends, see Chapters 1 and 3 of The Lie Behind the Lie Detector (http://antipolygraph.org/pubs.shtml).
