I agree with Stefano and Bill that taking a polygraph in this situation is a bad idea. And note that Bill is a polygraph examiner himself.

UK polygraphers generally use the probable-lie "control" question "test" (CQT), the same technique most commonly used in the USA. The "control" questions you may encounter may be different from those typically used in pre-employment screening contexts. Polygraph operator James Allan Matte suggests the following "control" questions in so-called "fidelity testing" (Forensic Psychophysiology Using the Polygraph, pp. 473-74):

Dou you remember ever being unfaithful to someone who trusted you?

Do you remember ever violating the trust of someone who loved you?

Would you consider being unfaithful to your spouse if you knew he/she would never find out?

The relevant questions will have to do with actual infidelity.

Behavioral countermeasures are also important. If you appear enthusiastic about the polygraph, fully confident in its accuracy, and eager to prove your honesty, it may help to convince the polygraph operator that you're telling the truth, making it more likely that he/she will pass you.

Many thanks for the comments which will be taken on board.

I do not wish to 'cheat' the machine, I  just want to ensure there won't be any instances of false positives which I have read so much about which is why I am seeking advice.

If my understanding is correct your partner is having trust issues regarding you cheating on him.  So you are going to cheat on a polygraph examination to insure you don't loose his trust?  It sounds counter-productive.  You are going to engage in cheating to prove you don't cheat?

Stefno gave very sound advice, i would second his motion.

Doing something inappropriate is wrong whether someone is adament or not. I urge you to reconsider as no good thing will come out of it and may even open up more venues for discord. Trying being more "adament" yourself.

My partner has requested I take a test regarding his trust issues with myself. Due to my previous abusive relationship I have entered this one with many issues such as still sometimes pointless white lies thinking I am protecting myself when it comes to certain things. Which is unnecessary with my current partner. I am seeking help and am on the way to a happier life. But I now have to go through this fraudulent questioning.

I completely disagree with the validilty of a 'lie detector' and think they are a ridiculous novelty and I am completely taken aback that my partner feels this will prove my innocence and ensure we get on with our lives. Marriage, children and our whole future is resting on this and if I decline he will think I'm guilty and if I take it and fail he will think I am guilty so I have decided to go ahead with it next week using countermeasures as a back up.

I know people will want to reply and say regardless of the outcome my partner will still not trust me and it won't fix the relationship but I have already decided to take it as he is adament this is what it will take. So all I'm asking is if anyone can give me any advice regarding taking the test. This may seem trivial to some but our future together is resting on this.

I am from the UK and there are only 3 relevant questions that will be asked. I have read the online book, The Lie Behind the Lie Detector and I was wondering if anyone has any tips when using countermeasures as I will be understandably very nervous on the relevant questions as well as the control questions, also any info re: the rate of success, and how different a UK poly may be to a USA one.
