It is very difficult to find out a lot about these positions, and for good reason. Personally I'm using this as a springboard for other positions. 911jobsforums.com has a lot of information from insiders on their federal job forum. It seems as if the FBI's demand has increased recently since many people are being considered for these positions.

Why not proceed and pursue the SSG position, if for no other reason, simply to get your foot-in-the-door with the bureau. Then when the window of opportunity presents itself again to apply for a special agent position, there is no harm in doing so from a professional support position, i. e., SSG.
This is not uncommon, as support personnel often pursue special agent positions if and when they complete their college degrees. I think few actual FBI employees would argue that special agent positions are a more desirable position within the bureau.
Think of it this way; if you have an opportunity to apply for, and secure an SSG position, you have nothing to lose, and an FBI SSG position to gain. Little downside to consider. Remember, you can always re-apply for a special agent position, once you're in the FBI system...
If you have already applied for, and received a conditional appointment letter for the SSG position, I would suggest that you proceed with the hiring process for the position offered.

- May 30, 2004, 10:04 PM I am currently on the cusp of being hired by the SSG (surveillance specialist) with the FBI however, I was considered for the agent position in March. Unfortunately, I greatly underestimated the Phase I exam and failed it (despite the fact that I'm good in math and have a strong math background). My understanding from this and other boards is that it is much better to be an agent with the bureau than work in a support position. Should I decline the SSG position and wait until next year to start the agent processing again or would doing this infuriate the bureau? I am also interested in the intelligence analyst position.
