The Associated Press reportsin an article on new Senate committee chairmen that pro-polygraph Senator Bob Graham (D-FL) is to chair the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence:
Quote:
INTELLIGENCE: Sen. Bob Graham of Florida is more conservative than most of his Democratic colleagues. He is an advocate of making people in sensitive intelligence jobs submit to polygraph examinations and audits of their finances.

I think that a key goal for those of us who seek the abolishment of polygraphy should be to make sure that Senator Graham promptly learns about "the lie behind the lie detector" (i.e. that polygraph testing is a fraud, biased against the truthful, yet easily defeated through simple countermeasures). If he then persists in his support of polygraphy, we must hold him publicly accountable for his folly.

I've just sent Senator Graham an open letter requesting that he schedule hearings on polygraph policy and suggesting witnesses to be called and questions to be asked. I also enclosed a spiral bound copy of The Lie Behind the Lie Detector. You'll find the text of my letter at:

http://antipolygraph.org/articles/article-014.shtml

I'll be following-up with a phone call in a couple weeks, and will let everyone know what kind of response I receive then. I encourage others also to write to Senator Graham about polygraph policy, as his committee is one of the key ones for enacting polygraph reform. His mailing address (send a letter, not an e-mail) is:

Honorable Bob Graham
524 Hart Senate Office Building
Washington DC 20510

His office phone number is (202) 224-3041. If you call, ask to speak with the staffer who handles intelligence matters.

For further information on Senator Graham, see his website:

http://www.senate.gov/~graham

Based on past press accounts, it seems that Senator Graham's support for polygraphy is not absolute, and it seems to me that there is room for optimism that Senator Graham, when presented with the facts about polygraphy, might change his position.
