Advice for my first test

I'm currently in the process of applying for a job that requires me to pass a polygraph test. There's practically no chance that I'll feel the need to lie about any questions I might be asked. Unfortunately I'm well aware that polygraphs are notoriously unreliable.

Without resorting to gimmicks like pricking myself, holding my breath, or biting my tongue (which the interviewer will probably notice anyway), is there anything I should do to help the thing work? I'm not trying to "beat the machine," I'm trying to make sure that the machine works as it's intended to.

One of my friends who passed the test for a similar job advised me to just be relaxed, make sure I get some sleep, etc.

Not sure if you have taken it already... but I have heard 'just' the opposite about sleep. To be very tired when taking it as that supposedly dulls the system. No coffee either.

I recently took my first poly since 1980's and although I told the truth I did not pass, was told I was "not truthful" and never to apply again. I suppose that if "everyone" applying "everywhere" just suddenly said "Nope, ain't going to take a poly" then jobs would go wanting until the poly was dropped as a testing device. Obviously a pipe dream but I will never take another and if that is a requirement of 'a job' then they can get a less qualified applicant as far as I'm concerned.

Good luck with it... I did as you did, told the truth. Take care.
