infedilety - failed but innocent

I had to take 3 polygraph tests. I also once thought if your telling the truth then it would be impossible to fail. Boy was I wrong. The first one I passed. It was on whether or not I had ever cheated on my husband during our 11 years together. I passed with flying colors. Next he wanted to know if I ever made arrangements to cheat on him. We couldn't go back to the first examiner because we would of had to wait a couple weeks. My husband wanted to know right away. A had a friend that tried to convince me to cheat on him. I later found out she was a swinger. That's how the test came about. We made a appointment for 2 days after the first one with Mr. Horvath (Florida). I was very nervous having to take a 2nd one but knew I didn't do anything wrong so how could I possibly fail! We missed the first appointment because my husband was very sick. So we went the following day and were 5 minutes late. The examiner's office was at a different location then on his website and we could not reach him. He was one hour late. He did not look anything like his picture. He was rude and very weird right from the start. He was very sick and vulgar with his questioning in his interview and after. He upset me very much when my husband left the room and during the exam. He was supposed to let us know of the results within 30 minutes we did not hear anything from him. It was 5 hours later until I found out I failed. I was mortified because I did not lie. My husband and I argued before the exams of course because he thought I did wrong but it got much worse after this one. Obviously after the friend asked me to cheat on him it was over with the friendship. About 2 weeks after the failed polygraph I took another test with Mr. Bryant. I passed with flying colors on whether or not I ever made arrangements to meet a man or cheat on my husband. My husband believes Mr. Bryant but at the same time thinks I still did wrong because in his mind polygraphs are 100% and if you fail you fail. Being upset cannot cause you to fail. I'm having a hard time finding info on the web that you can fail when telling the truth. I have filed a grievance with one of the associations that he belongs to. He has refused to give us a refund. Can you give me any info for him that you can fail when telling the truth? The president of the Police Polygraph has told him that being upset can cause you to fail. My husband wants to be 100% convinced and get this settled. We have never had problems before. We love each other very much but I'm sure you can imagine what it would be like if your loved one failed an exam. He doesn't get I was telling the truth and proved it in the end. Please help!

Jenny,

Polygraphs don't work. They are a scam. The only people claiming near 100% accuracy for polygraphy are the con artists who line their pockets by administering these bogus "tests."

The consensus view among scientists is that polygraphy has no scientific basis. Making matters worse, the procedure is inherently biased against the truthful, and yet easily fooled by liars who understand the simplistic assumptions on which the "test" is based. You might want to print out the following article by University of Minnesota professor of psychology William G. Iacono for your husband:

https://antipolygraph.org/articles/article-018.shtml

And also retired FBI scientist Drew Richardson's expert evaluation and opinion of CQT polygraphy:

https://antipolygraph.org/articles/article-028.shtml

For an account of the harm that can arise from entrusting one's marriage to a polygraph chartgazer, see polygraph victim Gary Smith's personal statement:

https://antipolygraph.org/statements/statement-028.pdf

I wish you and your husband all the best in sorting out the trust issues in your relationship. In this regard, reliance upon polygraph chart readings is a fool's solution. One might as well consult a Magic 8-Ball. You'll get equally reliable results at a considerably reduced cost.

Thank you for giving me that info. We are in the process of filing a grievance. Of course they are claiming that he really did not do anything wrong so far. On some of the web sites it says that yes you can fail from being upset but it also says in the same paragraph that lyers can pass. I can not obviously show him that because he will only see that you can pass if your lying. Hopefully all will work out. I may be pregnant and hes already threatened to take the child if it doesn't.
