Ashley Todd

The story of Ashley Todd, a McCain campaign volunteer from College Station, Texas who reported that in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, a mugger scratched a letter "B" into her face after seeing a McCain bumper sticker on her car, received national attention after it was highlighted on the right-leaning political website, the Drudge Report.

Jill King Greenwood of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports that Pittsburgh police now wish to polygraph Todd regarding the incident:

Quote:
A knife-wielding man robbed a McCain-Palin campaign volunteer and etched a "B" into her face after he saw a McCain bumper sticker on her car, the woman told Pittsburgh police.

Police planned to administer a polygraph test to Ashley Todd, 20, because her statements about the attack conflict with evidence from the Citizens Bank ATM where she claims the incident occurred, police said.

Todd, of College Station, Texas, told police she was using an ATM at Liberty Avenue and Pearl Street in Bloomfield just before 9 p.m. Wednesday when a man approached her, put a knife to her throat and demanded money.

...

Todd would be wise to refuse the polygraph, whether or not she is telling the truth. Polygraphy has no scientific basis to begin with, and as used by police in criminal investigations, it often serves as little more than a pretext for interrogating a suspect without a lawyer present. The fact that Pittsburgh police have leaked news of their planned lie detector test, along with the claim that ATM surveillance video contradicts Todd's report, suggests that they have already formed an opinion that Todd has not been fully truthful (and are seeking to manage public perceptions).

In this case, it seems likely that the polygraph will be used in much the same manner as the legendary colander attached to a photocopier:

David Nalle, Vice Chairman of the Republican Liberty Caucus, writing for Blogcritics Magazine, suggests that the polygraph was Ashley Todd's idea:

Quote:
...

In response to claims from pro-Obama bloggers that the story is fabricated and that she mutilated herself, Todd has offered to take a lie-detector test administered by the police. Police will also be viewing ATM video footage to verify her report and attempt to identify the attacker.

According to Jerome L. Sherman of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Ashley Todd submitted to a polygraph test last night (Thursday, 24 Oct.). No mention is made of the results:

Police say inconsistencies in McCain staffer's story
Friday, October 24, 2008
By Jerome L. Sherman, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Police say there are inconsistencies in the story of a McCain campaign staffer who told them she was mugged in Bloomfield on Wednesday night by a man who etched a "B" on her cheek when he saw a McCain sticker on her car.

Ashley Todd, 20, of College Station, Texas, spent five hours with robbery detectives last night at police headquarters, where she took a polygraph test. She told police that a man robbed her as she tried to take money from an ATM machine at Pearl Street and Liberty Avenue around 9 p.m. Wednesday.

Ms. Todd told police she then began walking to her car, which had McCain stickers on it. She told police that although the robber had moved away from her, he became agitated when he saw her car, punched her in the back of the head, pushed her to the ground and carved the letter into her face. Yesterday, she said the man sexually assaulted her, a detail that police said she didn't mention in the initial report.

Police today said that security camera footage from the Citizens Bank doesn't show the incident, but it could have happened outside the camera's range. Police also said they have found no witnesses to the attack. Ms. Todd has said she will return for further interviewing today and will help police create a composite sketch of her attacker.

He is described as a 6-foot 4-inch, 200-pound black man, with medium build and short black hair.

More details in tomorrow's Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

While Pittburgh police have declined to disclose Ashley Todd's polygraph results, she today confessed to having made up the story about having been assaulted by a 6'4" black man and now faces criminal charges for filing a false police report:

The "B" carved on her face appears to be backwards.

What's up with that?

There are really two things suspicious about that letter carved on her face. #1 it's backwards like it was carved looking in a mirror.  Another famous false attack claim that had this feature was the Tawana Brawley case. They seem to get the B's and E's backwards for some reason. #2 it is carved pretty neatly to have been done on a struggling victim.

The story that the movie The Exorcist was based upon also had some photos of writing supposedly done by the "demon" on the victim that had some backwards letters too.

I think when police see backwards letters on a victim they automatically become suspicious.

A mistake is where your check book doesn't balance.. she committed a crime.. lets not minimize criminal behavior.  that appears to be a common thread on this site

I don't see that.  I see the minimalization of polygraphy on this site.

And that girl did commit a crime, should be punished, and needs help.  And why she submitted to a poly is beyond me, though I suppose she's never been to this website...

Dear Gary,

I in no way intended to minimalize her behavior or responsiblity.  This type of person is going to cost both you and I alot of money in our lifetime if she is just going to be incarcerated without treatment.

She justified in her mind that it was acceptable to mutilate her face and come up with a false story about other people.

Maybe the use of the word "mistake" was not appropriate.  I did not intend to cover for her as much as to just make a statement that a normal person would not mutilate themselves to back up a lie in such a permanent way on her face.  She will be looking at that decision for the rest of her life in the mirror.

Without psychiatric treatment, this type of person will be in and out of jail for the rest of her life.

We pay for treatment now as taxpayers or we pay for jail cost as taxpayers.  I assure you that the jail costs are running at least $20-$80 per day per inmate and those inmates are not paying taxes.  Treatment is expensive but the lesser of two evils in this case.

Regards.
