New Fox Gameshow "Moment of Truth" May Be a Golden Opportunity for Exposing Polygraphy as Quackery

As noted on the blog, the Fox network is expected to air a pilot for a game show called Moment of Truth (original tentative title: Nothing But the Truth) in which contestants will be asked a series of 21 increasingly personal questions, regarding which they will be "tested" while connected to the lie detector. Winners will be awarded $500,000. A version of the show is already airing in Colombia, where it is reported to be a wild success. Versions are also planned in the UK, France, and Brazil.

Unfortunately, this show has had the effect of promoting misplaced public belief in the lie detector in Colombia, where the polygraph trade is reportedly booming. However, we may be able to turn the show to our advantage if and when it takes off in the United States.

Two years ago, humorist Harmon Leon "infiltrated" the now-discontinued television show Lie Detector with American Polygraph Association past president and faux Ph.D. Ed Gelb. He wrote about his exploit in an article for SF Weekly titled "Bullshitting the Lie Detector." Perhaps we, too might "infiltrate" someone onto this new show? It prove a golden ($500,000 worth) opportunity for exposing polygraphy as quackery.  Smiley

Thoughts?

Greetings George:

Yesterday evening I was discussing with my Bride the polygraph game show concept.  She felt it was a rehash of the old children’s game ‘truth or dare’.  Also, she noted that Columbia is a predominantly Catholic nation.  Interesting, here we have a secular outlet with prize money for religiously conditioned confession compulsions.

A casting call for the Fox network's new game show Moment of Truth (previously tentatively titled Nothing But the Truth) has been announced. It seems the maximum prize money will be $500,000 and not $50,000:

George,

This kind of publicity is a gold mine.  I wonder if any of the examiners will accuse the contestants of countermeasures.

I predict that hits on this website will skyrocket as curtain calls are announced.

The polygraph exam is full of drama and acting, now it will be professionally sponsored by paying advertisers.

American Idol, move over!  Any type of light shed on the "ART" of polygraph only allows more knowledge of the "deception" to be given to the masses.

The most basic assumption of polygraph operation needs the person being tested to be naive of the process.  There is going to be alot of discussion and research by many people on this subject.

If you are wrong George, the facts will bear this out.   Information is knowledge and knowledge is power.  Can we trust the masses with knowledge?

Regards, can't wait to hear the points and counterpoints at the water cooler.  Will the truth set you free?  Maybe pretending to be truthful will make you alot of money!  Only the Magic Rope knows!  This show is going to be a hit for at least one season.

Colombia Reality Gameshow Goes Off Air
Lie Detector Reality Gameshow Goes Off the Air in Colombia
October 09, 2007: 05:56 PM EST

NEW YORK (Associated Press) - The hit Colombian TV game show "Nothing But the Truth" is no more.
The show, in which contestants submitting to a lie-detector test must truthfully answer 21 increasingly invasive questions to win $50,000, has been canceled by Caracol Television after a contestant admitted on air to hiring a hit man to kill her husband. Tuesday was the show's final day.

However a U.S version called "Moment of the Truth" is expected to be launched on the Fox network in the coming months along with spin-offs in England, Australia, Germany, Italy and Spain, according to Howard Schultz, the Los Angeles-based creator of the show.

The Colombian show has scored high ratings normally reserved for popular telenovelas. It's also spurred a boom in polygraph usage among private companies, which use lie detector tests to screen employees and protect themselves from infiltration by Colombia's well-organized mafias.

On the show, dollar-desperate contestants confess, before a studio audience packed with unsuspecting loved ones, everything from extramarital affairs to drug smuggling and homosexual prostitution.

But the show also generated sharp rebukes from polygraph examiners in the United States, family-values groups, and legal experts who say the truth-telling spectacle is tantamount to a modern-day Roman Circus and sanctions criminal behavior. Complaints of indecency have also poured in to Colombia's national television commission.

The episode that sealed the show's fate was broadcast Oct. 2, when Rosa Maria Solano walked home with $25,000 after admitting she had hired a hit man to rub out her husband.

"The crime couldn't be carried out because the hit man tipped off my husband and he ran away forever _ God save me," said Solano after her shocking revelation.

In the face of negative public reaction to the show, and the threat of legal action against Caracol's producers for being after-the-fact accessories to crime, the network recoiled.

"We've reached the conclusion that the content of some of the interviews, for being excessively cruel, don't conform with what Caracol has always promoted," Caracol said in a statement last week announcing it would not bring the show back for a second season.

Schultz, the creator of such reality TV hits as MTV's "Next" and ABC's "Extreme Makeover, said he was unfamiliar with the controversial episode in Colombia but did not fear it would slow the show's worldwide rollout.

"We're very careful about the questions we ask and would never sanction any criminal behavior," he said.

To see a great fictional account of what sorts of super-realities exist as portrayed by Stephen King---read or watch the fictional work titled "Storm of the Century." When people are thoroughly exposed---as the supernatural character in the story exposes the people of the little off-shore Maine island----often times there exists widespread ugliness. The Fox show is less about polygraph and more about harsh despotism by seemingly good folks. I am not a fan of such raw exposure and/or polygraph exploitation. Your last post was rather thoughtful. Maybe I need to read it again.

The UK version of Moment of Truth, which is hosted by Jerry Springer and uses the orginal title Nothing But the Truth, has already begun airing on Britain's Sky One channel. The following is a YouTube compilation clip:

Some discussion of the UK show is available here:

http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=685147

And one show contestant, describing the show as "'Nothing But Lies' from start to finish," has decided to abrogate her confidentiality agreement and publicly state what really went on:
