The TV show "Lie Detector"

What a joke. I was flipping channels on Sunday when I saw a show called “Lie Detector”. All the buzzwords were used in this show, by both the host and the tester (Dr. Geld, a Dr. of what, who knows). They had a guy who claimed that in 1976 while serving in the Army his unit conducted anti-terrorist tests on the World Trade Center, and a guy that claimed that he wasn’t the driver of a car that was abandoned and he was charged for DUI. The funny thing is the polygrapher’s first statement was “any attempts to use CM’s will invalidate the test”.  Grin I think the test is already invalid.  The first guy, who claimed that his unit conducted tests for the world trade center, was told that he was a LIAR. He stated, “I don’t understand why I failed this one, and passed the first one”.  ???  The polygrapher’s explanation was that since it was conducted in Canada, his was more valid because they asked vague questions while his test asked specific question. Shocked   Huh?? The host said that even though he claimed to pass the last one, this is the one WE go by. Anyway, more proof that this machine is BS. It was to funny.  Grin

The show you saw is a re-run of an episode that first aired last year. It seems that Lie Detector didn't sell enough soap to justify a second season. "Dr." Ed Gelb, the show's polygraph operator, never received a doctoral degree from any accredited university, but has been fraudulently passing himself off as a Ph.D. (in psychology) for a number of years now. I have filed an ethics complaint against him with the American Polygraph Association, of which he is a past president and, according to his resume, a life member.

I guess this has been going on for a while now. I don't understand how they can get away with this. I read some old posts and someone posted what a hard course the DOD polygraph school was, and they spend many, many hours of training and they deserve to have a degree equal to a Masters. I went to grad school. I spent many, many MONTHS of intense training. I wrote several 15-20 page papers based on my own research, and passed a comprehensive exam of the courses content for my M.S.E.d I didn't hear anything in that post that mentioned individual research. I would assume that some critical thinking would be required and someone would question the authenticity.  And as every DOD school I attended (20yrs Army) I would assume that their comprehensive exam would have been multiple choice. They continue to claim that polygraphs are based on science.  I have yet to see one polygraph operator claim to have an actual science degree or indicate that they have any knowledge of the "Scientific Method."

Someone,

Whats interesting to point out here is that the DODPI is accredited by an organization that is only recognized by the US Department of Education, They are accredited by an orgainzation known as  Independant Association of Colleges & Schools (AICS).  Most beautician & barber schools are accredited by this organization as are most trade schools. Real colleges won't even recognize anything from these type of schools. Hence the fact that they want polygraphers to have at least a Bachelors degree in something before they get there. If you want rocket scientists then CALTECH or MIT is the place. If you want BS artists you get them from DODPI. Their training is as phoney as they are.

Regards ...

I agree, this show was as believable as the Maury Povich show. This polygrapher jumped out of his chair and was almost yelling defending the authenticity of his test to prove that some guy was cheating on his wife. Cheating on his wife? Are there so many of these guys out there that work is hard to find now? Grin
