Undiagnosed Seizure/Cardiac problems

I was a Deputy Sheriff in a great agency in Southern Arizona, I was sucessful and happy, but broke because it didnt pay well. I went for the big money and went to work for Northern Arizona University PD in 1998. I hated it, and within a week I was looking for a job with the county. I guess I intimidated my largely female coworkers and one of them filed a formal complaint against me saying that I had committed conduct unbecoming an officer because I was dating my former commander at my previous agency. She also alleged I had committed an act of domestic violence against my 6'6 male roommate, I am 5'2 and weighed 110 and my other roommate testified on my behalf, I had thrown him outand that was all. I of course denied the false claims but I was low on the totem pole so I was placed on paid leave pending an investigation. For almost a month I was grilled and harassed, my boyfriends agancy was contacted by her and he also got investigated, and cleared. The stress built and I had no rep to help me because my check to the union had mysteriously disappeared, I had originally paid it to the complaining officer, and I was confined to my home. My supervisor had told me I had to stay in town and I had to be available by phone 24/7. I got a call at 7pm one evening to report for a polygraph the next day, I told them I had the flu, but I was told that if I didnt show I would be fired and they would strip me of my certification. I blew a gasket! I got soo stressed out that I had chest pains and ended up in the emergency department until 4 am. Angina with t wave abnormalities, I reported for the exam as ordered and told the examiner what had occured. And he advised I shouldnt take the test, he called my chief and was told to administer it anyway. I complied and got truthful on all but 2 areas, the type of sex i had with my boyfriend and the amount of time i spent with him. that showed as ambigous.WHat the hell? How can they ask such private questions? Anyway, I was soo fed up and traumatized by the test and the crappy department, I threw my resignation and my badge at the chief and walked away from law enforcement forever.
What I really wonder is, could my later diagnoses of a seizure disorder,(partial complex that arise under stress) and a mild heart dysfunction. Could these problems have caused the test to show deception??
I am currently writing a research paper for my senior level writing class on polygraph and hgn tests and disability and any information could help, especially journal articles. I am due to graduate from college in May and I have been accepted to grad school. All but one of the officers from that department have left or been fired including the chief.

in my humble opinion as a layperson, you have been damaged, and that agency's egregious conduct is what caused it.  While I generally don't get very upset over such stories, if what you have said is truthful, I suspect you can find a PI lawyer that may be interested.

Good luck.

i appreciate your reply. I have mmoved on in my life, it was around 8 years ago, but yeah, it damaged me quite a bit  i still cannot work with women, and i developed a rage problem, so revisiting it would just exascerbate that and potentially bring more embarassment on to my now married ex, and i dont want to cause him anymore stress. thanks though for the suggestion.

jdglenn101,

There are no peer-reviewed studies of the effects of any medical condition on polygraph results. Thus it's hard to tell to what extent your seizure disorder and mild heart disfunction may have affected the outcome.

But in any event, polygraphy has not been proven to reliably detect deception at better than chance levels in people who have no medical conditions, let alone those who do. If the polygrapher administered a "control question test" (CQT), then if you were simply more nervous when answering one or more relevant questions than when answering the corresponding "control" questions, that would explain your "failure." If the polygrapher administered a "relevant/irrelevant test," than nervousness about the line of questioning alone could easily have resulted in your wrongly "failing."
