I am glad I found this site before being scheduled for a polygraph.  My polygraph experience started when I was told by my boss that I was being moved to a new department.  This new position required a polygraph due to the contract (this was a contract with a federal agency in the Washington DC area which I don't want to name).  Just the thought of it frightened me, though I knew I had nothing to hide.  Reading through this site and TLBTLD, I realized that no matter how other peoples' experiences were, I couldn't use countermeasures.  Call me old fashioned, but I just couldn't do it.  Instead, I chose blatant honesty.  When I arrived for my test, the polygrapher asked if I had done any research.  I politely and professionally explained that I am a researcher by trade, and I research everything, including the polygraph.  I told him that I knew all about the different components, the different testing techniques, etc.  I then told him that it was not fair that I should take a test that was no longer valid based on my understanding of the process.  He seemed flustered with my persistence so he left to get his boss.  Both were nice enough people, but after thirty minutes of talking to the supervisor, he gave me a waiver to sign that stated I was not a suitable candidate for polygraph.  I was told that a background investigation would still have to be done, but as long as it was clean, I should get my clearance.  My background investigation started recently, so I assume my processing is continuing.  I am still waiting for the final call, but it looks like honesty was the best policy for me.

Were you worried about lying during the exam? No one says you have to lie to use countermeasures.
