How long wait for a 3rd (NSA) poly???

I've heard the NSA is only doing 1st and 2nd polys till they get through backlog.  I had:
- 4 months of background investigation
- 2 months later, 1st poly
- 2 months later, 2nd poly
- 6 months later, no word on anything

Does anyone know how long the wait will be (I've been waiting 6 months since last poly

Does anyone know what it means to get 2 polys and still no clearance (hopless)???

Is anyone else still waiting after 14 months????

Once you get through the polys, NSA will direct the
DSS/DoD to start the TS background investigation.
For the TS, it is taking at least a year, once that is
completed, then your case still has to go through NSA
adjudication.  Adjudication can also take up to a year,
or more.  Also, NSA is getting very anal, so don't hold
your breath, about getting in.  I waited two years, then
went with a different Intel agency.  Good luck !

My background investigations were all done first, then the polygraph.  They told me all that was left before adjudication was the polygraph.  It sounds like the order of procedures for me was opposite of the norm.

I am applying for a contractor position working for the NSA, so can you tell me why in the hell it take 2 to 3 years for the whole process?  Is it a sign that they don't want to give me the clearance?

Why woudn't they just deny the clearance and be done with it?

What are you using for your baseline for the two years estimate?

Unfortunately, I don't have another agency to go with.

Annonymous person, please contact me.  I'd like to speak w/you via e-mail if you have time.

Thanks

You have the NSA clearance process in the wrong order;
first is the poly, then the TS background investigation,
then NSA takes the two results through the adjudication
process.  In my case, I was an ex-NSA employee with
some issues that were cleared up over two years ago,
but NSA did not have enough to reject me (I am sure
that I could have won, through appeals), so they will
just sit on it, until you give up.  So in my case, I said
screw it, and went with a different agency.  What is
important, is gettng an SCI, with DIA, NRO, CIA, etc.;
it always looks good on a resume.

Mr. Guest, I'm eager to talk to someone over phone.  If you have time, I'd love to give you a ring, or have you ring me (just shoot me an e-mail or give me yours, please).

Unlike you, I don't have any other way to get a clearance.  This seems to be my only shot.  I sure hope you're wrong about them sitting on the clearance when they don't want you.  It would kill me cause I've been through a looooottt of waiting for this damn clearance.  And I really don't have a shady past.

Why do you think they would have reversed the order of investigation steps for me (investigate first then polys)?

It isn't necessarily true that the polygraph comes first, and two years is an outside case for the length of time for the screening.  I don't know much about the process for contractors, but for regular employees, it usually takes 4-5 months and the background investigation is started as soon as security has the SF-86 (which is sometimes before the poly and sometimes after, depending on the path the employee follows).  I'm afraid I don't know whether it's true that third polys are taking so long.

Have you tried to talk to whoever is in charge of your recruitment about this?  The HR people generally don't know a lot about what's happening in security, but s/he can probably tell you if something has been decided on the poly and may be able to push for a quicker third poly.

Good luck!

Unfortunately, all my "security officer" says is that she hasn't heard anything since the 2nd poly (6 months ago).  I ask her to speak to someone to get info, or something, and she says she has and they just tell her there's no information.

I've tried not depending on this damn clearance, but the fact is that 14 months of waiting will make anyone invested in it (whether or not they want to).  Plus, it is my only ticket to a lot of job options.

I guess I was hoping to hear something definitive and/or something positive.

I think Mr. Guest is wrong about the length of time to
get cleared through NSA and DoD/DSS.  I read that OPM
is backlogged around 150,000 clearance cases.  I had
been an NSA employee, for many years, and know what
I am talking about.  The time frame, between failed
polys is about three months; add to that, the
investigation time for the TS, and the TS adjudication,
then the NSA adjudication, it can take up to two years.
If you don't have any significant issues, or foreign travel,
then it will probably take less time.  I empathize with
you about trying to find a good job, without the
TS/SCI.  With only a TS, at that time, I didn't find
anything good, until I got cleared for TS/SI with a
different agency.  How do you want to communicate ?
By the way, there are a lot of disfunctional people at
the Agency, and I am enjoying working with my
customer much better.

I recently interviewed at the NSA and asked everyone I met there how long their BI took.  The shortest time was 2.5 months, the longest 10 months, and the average 4-5 months.  So that's where the 4-5 months I quoted earlier came from.  This may not be true for contractors (I have no idea), but I would take any claim that 2 years is the normal length with a large grain of salt.

Oh, and I forgot to mention that the OPM being so backlogged has nothing to do with NSA.  DSS does NSA security clearances, and OPM uses a different agency.
