Backgrounds Question

Can someone with experience answer this?  I am applying for a police department and was given a background packet to fill out.  Everything seemed to go fine the first week my background investigator worked on my personal history.  Now I found out there may be something in my past that will disqualify me.  I am thirty five years old and don't remember every thing minor in my past, however I am being as honest with the background investigator as I remember.  My question is, if I fail backgrounds with this department is there any way to find out what I did or didn't do so I can submit it on my next background packet?  How can I disclose everything in my past if I honestly don't remember or don't know about it?  Please help, I am trying to be as honest with these people as I can...thank you

When I had my first backround done I also had things against me that I did not know about. Fortunatley for me, the department that did the backround told me what was bothering them and I was given a chance to explain. Every department I know of will tell you what disqualified you if you ask the backround investigators.
Also dont be so afraid of things they may find out unless there are prior arrests, domestics or things of that nature. Most departments understand that not everyone remembers everything, god knows I didnt and I have passed every backround I have ever been given. Oh, and just in case you didnt know, they all take forever.

Usually diqualifiers are pretty major things, things that I believe 99% of us would remember doing.  I find it hard to believe that you would not remember such a thing, as I am sure the BG investigator would too.  It would appear to me and more than likely to the investigator that you are hiding something or attempted to hide something and are hiding behind the pretense that you forgot.  Remember disqualifiers are not petty things.

As for disclosure of why you were dq'd, it depends on the department you applied with, some will tell you why, while others will not reveal anything about it.

SM,

I have to concur with Dimas on your issue. Have you had any discussions with your BI on problems with your PHS? If you have not been communicating with your BI, you need to start. You should call once every other week or so to check on your progress. It should not be detrimental to you.

Remember if they find something major as Dimas points out. The outlook for you isn't good and may harm you for future LE job applications

Good Luck
