lapd poly

took a lapd poly some time ago. examiner said results will be disclosed immediately after poly. So, i thought great! He asked approx 12 questions.
Do you intend to lie on the test?
Did you falsify any official documents?
Have you ever stolen $400 worth from employer?
Did you physically abuse domestic partner?
Did you ever lie to authority?
Have you ever tried drugs?
Have you ever commited undetected serious crime?
Did you ever lie to loved one's?
Is your name so and so?
Do you live in the US?
I can't remember all 12 basic questions.
I felt my heart beating throughout the whole testing process.
At certain questions, I felt a tug behind my neck. Then he left the room after the 1st batch of questioning. He stated my breathing was "atrocious."
2nd round of questioning, he said I did a little better but I need to work on the breathing and relaxing part. He closed the session by saying that i didn't fail nor pass and personnel will get in touch with me!
Well, for all honesty...what torture just to join the world's worst police force. I had no relation to any of the questions, didn't try to lie or use extensive countermeasure. Tried to use anal puck. but after all else it was too nerve racking being interogatted like that the first time. Not that anyone really cares whether I am truthful or not. Which I was. Never commited a serious crime, never slapped a girlfriend or such.
Been just a rebel child with a clean record. I think LAPD uses more emphasis on the poly rather than actually doing the BI.
Anyway, we'll see what happens the second time around. Hopefully I can relax, and breath since I already know the questions. After that, if they still don't want a good person like me, oh well some other agency can have me.

I feel exactly what you are saying.  Again, I was never specifically told "you passed" but think I was told something like, "everything looks good, personnel will contact you."  The very next week I was called to be scheduled for my medical, and psych.  BTW, you take your med and written psych (MMPI, Minn etc,.  and a culturally senstitive questionaire) on the same day, then they call you back for oral interview psych.  Good luck and get back to me with where you are at...  Half the battle is withstanding this grossly inefficient, tedious and bullshit process...

What should I expect on the medical/psych?  I'm also processing for the LAPD and passed the poly last week.  Any advice would be great.  How long does the BI take (on avg?)I'm going to do some ride alongs pretty soon to give me an idea of the stations I'd like to work at.  Also going to start going to CAPS again to get in better shape.

Good luck!

I recently took the polycrap examination. I must admit that I have never seen such trickery implemented to deter honest candidates from making the cut for their high hiring standards. As a brief insight to my background, I am a private investigator working in the retail sector. I have been trained in the art of interrogation by three different institutes and have conducted over 500 interrogations. During my exam I was complete calm and answered the questions with out hesitation or any reserve. I was only asked 5 questions, which were the following:
Name:
Have you ever lied to a loved one.
Have you ever lied to get someone out of trouble.
Have you ever used any narcotic.
Have you ever associated with a street gang.

After the stim test I was accused of using countermeasures to deceive the examiners crystal ball. He stated that my breathing rate, and pulse rate had been manipulated.  However I was unaware of these tactics until after my poly. It is second nature for me to remain calm during tense situations. After the test I was subjected to a post interrogation, which was one of the worst I had ever seen. To make a long story short, I was informed that my results are being forwarded to the personal department for review. I wish everyone the best luck on their poly with LA. In my opinion their staff is completely driven by their own self-inflated ego’s.

Note: Your post has been edited to protect your privacy. Specifically, the date of your polygraph interrogation was changed to "recently" and a specific detail of your work history has been removed. --AntiPolygraph.org Administrator

I just did a psyke and phisical but not for the lapd.  The physical involved a hearing and vision test, chest xray, actual turn-your-head-and-cough physical as well as a blood test and urine analysis.  The psyke consisted of 3 tests.  The first was over 500 questions. The third was over 200 and the third was about 150 questions.  Took me 2.5 hours to do all three.  It sounds like a lot but they are easy to answer.

The only advice I can give is that you dress well for these tests.  Chances are that both the docter for the physical and the doctor for the psyke work exclusiivley for the lapd or city of LA and will note how professional you look.  Sounds stupid but it will make a differrence.

The very long questionaire is probably the MMPI-2, or Minnesota Multi-phasic Personality Inventory.

The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 (MMPI-2) instrument, the restandardized version of the original MMPI® instrument, is an empirically-based assessment of adult psychopathology. The MMPI-2 instrument, provided by NCS, is the standard that mental health professionals use to help measure psychopathology across a broad range of client settings. The MMPI-2 instrument is used by clinicians in hospitals, clinics, counseling programs, and private practice to assist with the diagnosis of mental disorders and the selection of an appropriate treatment method.

Derived from the original MMPI instrument, the MMPI-2 instrument preserves the most valuable features of the original assessment while addressing contemporary concerns to provide better descriptive and diagnostic information for clients today. The MMPI-2 instrument contains items appropriate and relevant to current test-takers. Special effort has been made to eliminate sexist wording and outmoded content. Duplicate items and items with objectionable content have also been eliminated.

The MMPI-2 consists of 567 statements to which the subject responds with true, false, or cannot say. It was designed primarily for adults and has not yet been used for children (although the 1992 MMPI-A was designed for adolescents). The items cover a wide range of topics, including attitudes on religion and sexual practices, perceptions of health, political ideas, information on family, education, and occupation, and displays of symptoms known to be exhibited by certain groups of mentally disturbed people.

The normative sample of the MMPI-2 instrument consists of 1,138 males and 1,462 females between the ages of 18 and 80 from several geographic regions and diverse communities within the U.S. The sample is much larger and more nationally representative than that of the original MMPI instrument.

Ns4life,

It would be prudent to promptly appeal in writing your polygrapher's accusation that you employed countermeasures. See Chapter 5 of The Lie Behind the Lie Detector for some general suggestions on how to proceed.

Also, you might want to edit your post to anonymize a bit. It is likely that LAPD polygraphers monitor this message board.

Thank you, Beast for your input, especially on the tip regarding attire!  And much thanks to Beech Trees for the info on the MMPI-2.  I will post more info on the poly itself a little later.
And George, I will indeed write letters to the people sugguested regarding the ban on polygraphs.  I was wondering if/how this would affect my hiring process?

Ns4life, I'm so sorry about your interrogation.  I would absolutely protest the inappropriate manner in which your poly was conducted.  I have read many posts from people who passed their second poly after protesting the first one.  Good luck!

Good question! I think retaliation for writing to your elected representatives is unlikely, especially if you don't mention in your letter that you are currently in the LAPD hiring process. If you would like to mention your personal experience and you're concerned about the possibility of retaliation, then it might be best to wait before sending those letters.
