I am going to take the LAPD polygraph soon.  I need some help!  Can anyone tell me what to expect - specific question, how it went.  I am also not 100% sure about the difference between control and relevent questions.  I would greatly appreciate any help.

thejedicaulfield,

Your post has been edited to protect your privacy. Specifically, the time frame when you are scheduled to be polygraphed has been changed to "soon." If you disagree with this change, you may re-edit your message.

I to will be taking the poly for LAPD soon. I have heard that they sometimes use only relevant questions and no control questions?

Any help would be appreciated.

LAPD Applicants:

First, congratulations on finding this site.  Knowledge IS power.  I only wish I had found this site before my first polygraph; I would have graduated the academy by now.

If you haven't already done so, you need to read "The Lie Behind the Lie Detector" and understand how to recognize control vs. relevant questions.  You should also practice your countermeasures: behavioral and physical.  For my second polygraph I used the behavioral countermeasures from "The Lie Behind..." and the physical countermeasures that Doug Williams teaches. They worked perfectly.

You can expect your polygraph to last anywhere from two to four hours.  You should also expect your examiner to accuse you of lying.  Be prepared and stick to your guns; don't change your story even if it means lying a bit.  LAPD will use control questions.  Here's a list of irrelevant, relevant and control questions that I ran into:

I   1.  Is your name_______?
I   2.  Do you live in the United States?

C  3.  Have you ever lied to someone who trusted you?
C  4.  Have you ever betrayed someone who trusted you?
C  5.  Have you ever lied to someone in a position of authority?
C  6.  Have you ever lied to get out of trouble?

R  7.  Have you stolen more than $300.00 from an employer?
R  8.  Have you ever injured someone as a result of a domestic dispute?
R  9.  Are you concealing information regarding your drug history?
R 10. Are you concealing information regarding your work history?
R 11. Are you concealing information regarding your background?
R 12. Are you concealing information regarding a serious crime?
R 13. Have you ever acted on a bias?
R 14. Do you intend to answer all questions truthfully?
R 15. Have you done anything to intentionally defeat this test?
R 16. Have you answered all questions truthfully?

I believe that LAPD polygraphers are aware of this message board and probably check it.  They may change the questions somewhat, but if you understand how to identify relevants and controls you should have no problem.

Good luck!

Wolfe,

You need to download, read, and understand the material found in "The Lie Behind the Lie Dectector."  It will cover how to identify both control and relevant questions and how to "respond" to them.  It's not difficult, but you must have a clear concept of how the polygraph works and how to augment your responses to control questions before you take your polygraph.

First off, I can tell you exactly what they will do on the test now (it changed quite a bit recently). What questions do you think you will have trouble with?

Wolfe:

You can dowload "The Lie Behind the Lie Detector" from this site (Antipolygraph.org).  Learn it, know it, live it.  If, after reading it, you still have questions, there are quite a few people here that are willing to help you out.

Boborini:

If you have information regarding how the "test" has changed, please take the time to post it for everyone to see.

akuma264666,

Doug Williams is a former police polygrapher and the author of a manual titled "How to Sting the Polygraph" which may be purchased from his website, http://www.polygraph.com. The countermeasures he discusses in this manual include the anal sphincter contraction and breathing manipulations.

Mr. Williams' manual is one of the sources relied upon in AntiPolygraph.org's book, The Lie Behind the Lie Detector.
