Title: New Fox Gameshow "Moment of Truth" May Be a Golden Opportunity for Exposing Polygraphy as Quackery Post by George W. Maschke on Aug 9th, 2007 at 9:25am
As noted on the blog, the Fox network is expected to air a pilot for a game show called Moment of Truth (original tentative title: Nothing But the Truth) in which contestants will be asked a series of 21 increasingly personal questions, regarding which they will be "tested" while connected to the lie detector. Winners will be awarded $500,000. A version of the show is already airing in Colombia, where it is reported to be a wild success. Versions are also planned in the UK, France, and Brazil.
Unfortunately, this show has had the effect of promoting misplaced public belief in the lie detector in Colombia, where the polygraph trade is reportedly booming. However, we may be able to turn the show to our advantage if and when it takes off in the United States. Two years ago, humorist Harmon Leon "infiltrated" the now-discontinued television show Lie Detector with American Polygraph Association past president and faux Ph.D. Ed Gelb. He wrote about his exploit in an article for SF Weekly titled "Bullshitting the Lie Detector." Perhaps we, too might "infiltrate" someone onto this new show? It prove a golden ($500,000 worth) opportunity for exposing polygraphy as quackery. :) Thoughts? |
