  An article I wrote in 1986 with a defence lawyer seems quite relevant
to this case.  It is:

   The main problem with juries is that they (and judges) assign too much
credibility to confessions. especially as most are unaware of the
confession-inducing use (its only real use) of the polygraph.  It
doesn't sound as if the steps outlined in this article were followed
by the defence.  If there is an appeal,, it should consider this mode
of defence.
