Title: Failed Drug Part of Poly??? Post by grassleo on Jan 28th, 2005 at 9:07am
:-/
A few days ago I took my Polygraph for an agency in Las Vegas. I was asked the follwoing questions along with about 10 others; 1. "Would you make up information or LIE on a BI (Background Investigation) and any of the other documents in order to pass?" 2. "Would I ever lie on a Official Document? (which the polygrapher explained to me as is something THAT IS A PAPER I PERSONALLY SIGNED.)" 3. "Have I ever committed a felony that I was not caught for?". I PASSED ALL OF THESE QUESTIONS! However, at the end of the test it was said I failed the drug part and accused of taking EXTACY WHICH I HAVE NEVER DONE!!! I think that the poygrapher was trying to just psych me out to admit to drug use. How could I have passed those other three and LOST OUT ON THE THIRD? That does NOT make sense to me, as I would have been lying about the others as well! I swear!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Was he trying to psych me out to get me to admit to something I never did or did I get a false positive. PLEASE PLEASE HELP!!!! Thank you SO much guys for answering. Papi |

Note that the first two questions you listed are "hypothetical control" questions that are intended to elicit a physiological response, which is then compared with any reactions to corresponding relevant questions. When polygraph "tests" are scored, an opinion is rendered only with regard to the subject's answers to the relevant questions. Examinees are not supposed to know about this. But it results in logical absurdities when there is a false positive result. As you noted, how can you have "failed" a question about drug use while ostensibly having "passed" a question about whether you would make up information in order to pass? It makes no sense.
Polygraph "testing" has no scientific basis, and false positive results are not uncommon. While it is possible that your polygrapher was simply bluffing you in an attempt to get an admission, it would be best to be prepared for the worst. If you do receive official notification that you "failed," then it would be advisable to file a written appeal of the polygraph results, maintaining that you told the truth, and politely requesting the opportunity for a re-test. |
