I’m a 45 year male with no law enforcement experience. I decided on a career change after 20 years in management at my current job. So I took the test for local PD in California. I passed the written exam and was invited to participate in the physical agility test. I crushed it. Even beating some guys 20 years younger than me. I’m in top shape and I take my workouts seriously. I then competed my Pre Employment package.. I passed that and moved on to background. Perfect driving record, excellent credit, excellent employment history and stable family. However my BI kept asking me if I was sure I wanted to go through the academy at my age.. I said of course I do. So I was pushed through the background process. Feeling I had an upper hand on these young recruits I felt very confident. So I was then scheduled for the poly. A buddy of mine within the department told me it’s all just for show and they will mess with you to see if you crack. So I went in extremely relaxed and confident. The polygraphs was about my age and we had a pleasant conversation. I could tell he noticed I wasn’t easily intimidated by his BS. So he behaved. After the poly he said “ something is weighing you down” it seems like you are hiding something. I chuckled and said I’ve told u everything about me in the PHS and I’ve been nothing but honest so I would like some honesty from you as well. He then said this interview is over, I’ll let your BI know you failed. I replied “why would I fail? “ he didn’t answer and escorted me out. I then spoke to my BI and she said I failed a question about drug use. Again I was offended because I’ve never done drugs or smoke... Geez my last drink was probably 2 or 3 years ago... lol So I received a Thanks but you are not moving forward please apply next year email. My buddy said they were really looking for much younger candidates and the poly was their way of legally cutting me even though I was a qualified candidate... sound like I got shafted.. They can’t legally discriminate on my age but I wasn’t their cup of tea.. Sad Sad Sad..
