I have seen people ask about social media questions on various forums but there are not many discussions about it. This post is just to inform everyone that the U.S. Intelligence Community (IC) and the Department of Defense (DoD) will ask about your social media. However, the social media questions are not part of the set of standard polygraph questions that you are asked when the machine is up and running. The social media questions come during the pre-test, post-test, and in-between session interrogations.
They are really looking at your foreign connections, if you are plotting an insurrection, or selling drugs. They don't care about your political views or trolling. Therefore, it is fine if you are on the standard apps like LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, Reddit, and such. You may be asked what kinds of things you post on these apps.
Now, if you use any foreign messaging apps that are not standard in the U.S. such as WeChat (China) or VK (Russia), they will want to know why. This could indicate you have some foreign connections that may get you disqualified. If you mention you use Telegram or Signal, they will want to know why since most people use WhatsApp. Telegram (the secret e2e encrypted chat feature) and Signal are often used by drug dealers and pedophiles who want an extra layer of security.
The CIA and NSA will want a listing of all of your foreign social media contacts, even if you never met them.
Remember, the more you talk and share information during a polygraph, the more doors you open for the polygrapher to interrogate you. This goes for counterintelligence and full-scope polys. The polygrapher is limited on what he or she is allowed to ask but they will trick the applicant into opening a door for more information.
