Hi Moe,

Will be taking a poly soon for a pd, not for officer position though , you mentioned credit.  What did the BG -background thing ask about credit and did polygrapher ask bout it..been in school for over a decade and a divorce...so dont have excellent credit..

how far back did BG go...

Moe,

Congratulations on passing your polygraph! I would just note that, " Are you going to be truthful today with me?" was a sacrifice relevant question. It is quite possible that your polygrapher questions everyone on the marijuana question, just to see if he can get an admission.

Thank you for sharing your experience here, and good luck in the rest of the hiring process!

I had posted here before asking for advice, and I waited a while before posting here my thoughts that I jotted down right after I got home. I changed some of the things  just in case..

***********
Sit down, do a background questionaire that I get started on outside the office. Continue inside and filling out the questionaire.

Get asked about credit history/gambling debts, arrests, honesty on the background questionaire, if i have ever taken a poly before.

Then given some information about the poly how it has been around since 1920 so it must work. The guy asks me whether I know what an undetected crime is and to give him an example, I say "yes if i throw a brick through a neighbors window and nobody finds out." The guy says good, then explains he knows a lot of young guys do stupid stuff in their lives like breaking things, vandalizing. I tell him "well I did drink underage  and a few times I drove after drinking." The guy gives me a list of items and asks me to check off whether they are undetected crimes I've done. I look over it, look at the threatening someone section, I say "I'm sure I've threatened someone before." The guy says well this is more about whether you really were going to kill someone. He says ok, lets do the practice test. I do the test where I get a sheet of paper with 1, 2, [ ], 4, 5 and asked to fill in the 3. Then told to say no when asked if I wrote each of the numbers. The guy says my breathing was right, I did it well and I held my breath a little when I lied on 3 that it shows I react normally. It looked identical to me.

The guy sets up 3 questionaires, each has around 15 questions. They will be repeated over and over again. Some of these I remember were:

Is today Monday? (this was a bullshit question) YES
Have you ever taken a polygraph before? NO
Are you going to be truthful today with me? (this seemed the control question to test my stress level) YES
Were you completely truthful on your background questionaire? YES
Do you have any illegal reasons for wanting a job at Johnny Law  police department? NO
Have you ever lied to someone in a position of authority? NO
Did you take any drug today to help you defeat the polygraph? NO
Have you smoked marijuana in the past 3 years? NO
Other than smoking marijuana have you ever used, held, or sold any other drugs? NO
Do you have any gambling debts? NO
Other than what you put on the questionaire have you commited any OTHER undetected crimes? NO
Have you applied to any other departments or government agencies that you did not mention? NO

The guy tries to make small talk in between each section. Anyway, at the very end he asks how I think I did, I say "I did fine."
He looks over the graphs, and looks at me trying to psych me out. He looks at the question on marijuana use within the last 3 years
and says, "I see your marks changed a little here," what were u thinking of when I asked that question. I explain I have friends who still smoke pot and that must've been on my mind. the guy says Ok.., and then he starts folding up the paper, and says "this one was a little borderline too," but doesnt explain to which one he referred. He says "well I'll give you the benefit of the doubt, congratulations you passed, let me send this printot to johny law and they'll schedule you for the psychological test." I say, I already did that the previous morning and he says "good good, you should be on your way to a physical now or something." The guy was polite and made small talk as he escorted me out.

The test itself mightve taken 20 minutes, but the whole process took over 2 hours considering the time it took me to fill out the questionaire, listen to his bullshit, the intimidation tactics, etc. The whole point seemed to be to get me to confess to something and slip up.

I have a feeling he asked everyone about the marks on the marijuana question??
