I've seen full statistics for a lot of departments written up a number of times. Unfortunately, I do not have any links to a detailed list at hand…
Exceeding the Posted Speed Limit always seems to be #1.
Passing a Steady Red Light is usually #2 on lists of most common citations, followed closely by Failing to Stop at a Stop Sign.
Unsafe Lane Change and/or Fail to Signal usually round out the list of the top five.
A very general 2002 survey of most common traffic tickets written by the Boston Police (I found this with a quick Google search) can be found at: http://www.motorists.com/ma/analysis.html

Many police officers pull over some motorists and issue them a ticket. I was wondering what is the main reason why someone is issues a ticket. Would you say it is speeding, skiping the stop sighn, skipping the red light, ect. Hopefully a police officer can respond.
