I am a cop and I had a DUI 10 years ago. I haven't had any tickets since then, and only 2 speeding tickets before that. I was hired recently (6 months ago) so a good deal of time had passed since my DUI.
Hopes this helps.

Guest,

Ten years since your DUI is a long stretch.  The time factor worked in your favor.  Driven has a fresh DUI and he will definitely need to clear probation before he is considered.

Thanks again for the comments.  I wish i had some "pull" myself lol in the PD.  I do have a cousin in Lapd who's somewhat decorated, but i will see if the Judge grants my remaining year of probation terminated.  If so then i'm on my way, my background is perfect, i've never even tried any drug in my life....occasional beer etc.. *not while driving* .  So a 2year time lapse after the dui is ample time?  By the time i hit the BI i will have 3yrs lapse... that should be suffice, you think?

are you in cali?

regards.  Smiley

They didn't grill me at all. I was honest on the application and I wasn't worried about it because I had been informed that if it had been more than two years it wouldn't count against me. The problem you have is that you are on probation. My department, or any department in my state can not hire you if you are on probation. The academy will not certify if this is the case.
I had no problem with the poly and passed the first time. I did read TLBTLD before the test and I went in knowing I was going to pass.
I had no questions regarding DUI on my poly directly. Just "are you being honest about your driving history" and the like.
Let me know if you have any more questions and good luck!
PS remember you must do something about the probation thing, it is good to continue contact with the PD because sometimes, hell most of the times, it's not what you know but who you know. Wink

thanks for the reply...   How hard did they grill you about the .DUI. thru your process..... did you expunge it or didn't even bother since they background they find it anyways.....

also on the poly did u have alot of dui questions on it.. and did you pass your poly on ur first go?

Fred and guest,

thanks for the replies... I am aware of the predicament i was in and didn't realize a few drinks could cause this much frustration... I am going to do a few more months volunteer work and try my luck before the judge to see if my remaining year of probation will be terminated.  By the time i hit my background check it should be 3yrs time passed.. i'm going to keep trying.

speaking of anti poly, the dui will def. come up on the poly i can only imagine.

I got a DUI almost 2yrs ago from today and was placed on 3yrs probation.  Nothing prior to that nothing since.. ( i rarely drink at all now).  Im motivated to join lapd and i wont give up.  Question to anyone.. im going to see if they judge will drop  the remaining year of my probation seeing i've done all my classes/fines/ and am a good person.. ie. volunteer work and LAPD prep. classes.  I need the probation terminated so i can take the written LAPD/SHERIFF tests.

Does anyone know of anyone that has became a cop w/ a dui in the past.  I was younger and i admit my mistake.  Will this mess me up even if i EXPUNGE it off my record.. and what are the chances i can get my last year of prob. dropped for LAW ENFORCEMENT purposes.  I know i will make a great officer, i know it.

Any feedback will be greatly appreciated.

Driven,

You are in quite a tough situation. I can't speak for the LAPD, but at the LASD, you probably would have to wait a few more years before you apply. I can say that potential civilian employees at the LASD with recent DUI's are DQ'ed for them. In California the DUI/DWI laws are very tough, (you know this well). My opinion is that the judge will NOT show you any preferential treatment. You should discuss this with your attorney and get their advice.

Also be advised that the LASD is currently not hiring for deputies as a result of budget cuts. They anticipate starting the process again in July 2003. You may want to try Long Beach PD, who will be accepting applications starting August 30-Oct. 25. check them out at www.longbeachpd.org. You can also check with the LAPD recruitment unit to see where they will stand with your background.

You are showing maturity in facing up to your problems, however, getting the DUI shows lack of proper judgement and you will be subject to harsh questioning about it. You should also consider furthering your education as another "edge" to show that you really interested in a LE career.

Good Luck

Someone you know was DQ'd for 3traffic tickets ?  I wonder if an EXPUNGMENT of this will solve the problem on that... by the time i get to the background, after the written / oral / physical which i am confident i will pass, it will be 3yrs after the DUI.  I hope that is ample time to be approved by LAPD.

anyone else know anything....

I have only heard of 4 departments that will hire with a DUI. 1.) Military Police, Department of Defense Police, Vetrans Affairs (VA) Police, and New York Police Department.
My friend is in NYPD Academy and he told me they are hiring those with misdemeanors and one he knows of has a DUI. As long as your clean and have been for some time he told me they will waive it, but he said its very hard. As far as LAPD, my friend went through there process, he's 21 years old, has 3 tickets on his license and he was DQ'd. So LAPD you might have to wait a couple years. Good luck though.
