Excerpt:

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth fired a top Army general this week after accusing him of leaking classified information related to Iran and Russia to the news media.

Lt. Gen. Brett Sylvia, a highly regarded officer and combat veteran, was serving on the Joint Staff as the director of strategy when he was removed. His dismissal is part of a broad and extraordinary campaign to use polygraph tests to find and punish leakers.

The scope of the investigation is without parallel. Mass polygraph tests have never been administered to the top ranks of the U.S. military in modern history. Senior Pentagon officials did not offer any details or proof in support of the leaking allegations leveled against General Sylvia beyond a statement that said he had failed three polygraph exams.

The Defense Department “has zero tolerance for the intentional, unauthorized disclosure of classified information,” Sean Parnell, the Pentagon’s chief spokesman, said in a statement. “Anyone who compromises sensitive national security information puts the lives of our warriors at risk and undermines every military operation that keeps our country safe.”

Mr. Parnell said that there was “an extensive” investigation into the leaking allegations and that Mr. Hegseth “took necessary personnel action to protect sensitive information.”

A Pentagon official said that the investigation into General Sylvia has been referred to the Justice Department for further action, though it is unclear whether investigators have uncovered any evidence of criminal wrongdoing.

A Justice Department spokeswoman did not comment specifically on General Sylvia but said investigations of possible leaks of classified information are continuing.

Last year, Mr. Hegseth accused three members of his immediate staff of leaking classified information, promised a full investigation and suggested, without offering proof, that a Pentagon investigation had already uncovered evidence of their guilt.

Nearly 18 months later, that investigation has turned up no proof that the three officials — Dan Caldwell, Colin Carroll and Darin Selnick — committed any wrongdoing. Mr. Caldwell was rehired earlier this year by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence.

In August, U.S. government investigators subjected roughly 50 members of the U.S. military’s Joint Staff to polygraph tests over leaks to journalists, including about how the war with Iran has created a shortage of crucial munitions, according to officials briefed on the move. Because they are viewed as unreliable, polygraph tests are not admissible as evidence at a court-martial.

The polygraph tests followed a flurry of news reports that detailed diminished stocks of long-range missiles, Patriot interceptors and other crucial munitions. The show of force appeared aimed at not just ferreting out anyone who may have shared information but also intimidating others who might do so in the future, according to people with knowledge of the effort.

Between 1,500 and 2,000 officers and officials work for the Joint Staff, which coordinates operations, policy and war plans with combatant commanders around the world.

General Sylvia’s firing was reported on Wednesday night by The Atlantic. In the immediate aftermath of his dismissal, a spokesman for the Joint Staff put out a statement commending him for “his 32 years of distinguished service to our nation.”

“We wish him and his family the best as they graduate to new opportunities and the next chapters of their lives,” the statement read.

On Thursday morning, a Joint Staff spokesman retracted the first statement and issued a new one that said: “Out of respect for the service member and the ongoing personnel process, we will not comment further.”

As part of the investigation, General Sylvia acknowledged that he knew and had conversations with at least one journalist while serving on the Joint Staff but denied sharing any sensitive or classified information, according to two officials who spoke on condition of anonymity to share sensitive information. Senior Pentagon officials, including members of Mr. Hegseth’s staff, frequently talk to reporters.

The general’s dismissal shocked and angered many current and retired senior Army officers. They described him as a loyal officer who had served bravely in combat and thought deeply about how the military needed to adapt and embrace new technology to fight future wars.

When asked about the firing on Thursday, President Trump mistook General Sylvia for a woman: “She’s got problems,” Mr. Trump said. “She’s going to have big problems. We’re very much looking for leakers.”

General Sylvia worked directly for Gen. Dan Caine, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Also on 29 October 2026, Marc Caputo and Thomas Novelly reported for Axios on Sylvia’s firing in an article titled “Exclusive: Fired general admitted to leaking classified Iran and Ukraine info, report says,” citing an “internal report” provided by a source who was unwilling to be named. Their report is cited here in full:

The Pentagon’s top military planner admitted to leaking classified information about Ukraine and Iran to two reporters from separate outlets over a one-year period, according to an internal report of the investigation shared with Axios.

Why it matters: Army Lt. Gen. Brett Sylvia was fired this week by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth for the alleged misconduct, which the career soldier acknowledged on video after he failed four polygraph tests, a U.S. official said.

“He had trouble passing multiple polygraph interviews,” the internal Pentagon report said.

The report accused the general of making “unauthorized disclosures to the media,” and said he “was cooperative with answering questions about interactions with the media to resolve this, and provided his personal phone for a forensics examination.”

The investigation was conducted by the Air Force Office of Special Investigations.

Zoom in: The report and U.S. officials said that Sylvia’s leaking began as early as June 2025 — before mainstream media outlets were removed from the Pentagon — and continued afterward via secure Signal app and once at a Silver Diner in Arlington, Va.

“The meeting at the diner occurred because [redacted’s] access to the Pentagon was revoked between meetings,” the report says.

“During the meeting at the diner, [Sylvia] relied on notes he took while reviewing a classified secret report to orally give redacted on U.S. assistance to Ukraine, the report says.

The report says the reporter in question was writing a book and met twice with Sylvia. It also emphasized that the general “did not coordinate these meetings with [the Pentagon’s Public Affairs Office], or seek to have the information reviewed before providing it to the reporter.”

The intrigue: U.S. officials suspect that Sylvia intentionally deleted any trace of contact on Signal between him and one of the reporters, but pretended it was an accident.

“Sometime between June or July, Sylvia received Signal messages from [redacted]. Sylvia is unable to recall exactly what was in that message,” the report said. “But he believes it had something to do with Iran.”

“He stated that he did not respond to the message and instead deleted it. While deleting it, he believes he deleted the entire message thread with [redacted],” the report said. “This erased Signal messages and Signal phone calls that would have been recorded in Signal on his personal phone.”

For another story, the report said, Sylvia “admitted to being one of the 20 officials” cited in a story criticizing Pentagon leadership.

Another U.S. official told Axios that Acting Army Secretary Adam Telle and his office lobbied the Joint Staff to put out a statement supporting Sylvia “to minimize the damage about any future claims of him leaking classified information.”

After someone within the Defense Department revealed to the Joint Staff why Sylvia was fired, the Joint Staff retracted its statement.

An Army official disputed the notion that Telle’s office pushed for a statement supporting Sylvia:

“This is the latest in a coordinated campaign of lies designed to sow chaos,” the Army official said. “Acting Secretary Telle and his office did not advocate for any statement regarding LTG Sylvia. This entire narrative is false.”

Sylvia’s dismissal marks the latest crackdown on leakers and the press from Hegseth’s Pentagon.

In July, the Defense Department announced a joint task force with the Justice Department that aimed to identify Pentagon leakers. It also called on the Pentagon’s Office of General Counsel to prioritize prosecutions of those who make unauthorized disclosures to the media.

Last year, in response to restrictive rules imposed by the Pentagon, several defense reporters and media outlets turned in their media passes.

What they’re saying: Sylvia did not immediately respond to a phone call, voicemail and text message left at the phone number listed for him in public records.

It is curious that no one at the Pentagon is willing to speak on the record about LTG Sylvia’s firing. Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell, in a post to the social media platform X, declined to mention LTG Sylvia’s name or make any specific allegation against him. The off-the-record disclosure of LTG Sylvia’s allegedly having failed multiple polygraph “test” clearly seems designed to impugn his reputation and is a clear violation of the Privacy Act of 1974.

The claim that LTG admitted to having leaked classified information is dubious. Had he made such an admission to a felony crime, one would expect that Secretary of Defense Hegseth would have had him court-martialed, rather than merely firing him and making a referral to the Justice Department.

On Thursday, 29 October 2026, Greg Jaffe reported for the New York Times in an article titled “Hegseth Fires General He Accused of Leaking Information to the News Media” that U.S. Army Lieutenant General Brett Sylvia had been dismissed earlier that week.
