Goan, was arrested on Friday, 11 September 2026 and charged with a series of misdemeanor crimes associated with his work as a polygraph operator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Portland, Maine television station WGME has more details about the charges. On Tuesday, 15 September 2026, WGME staff <a href=\"https:\/\/wgme.com\/news\/local\/youre-good-buddy-former-maine-detective-accused-of-falsifying-polygraph-records-regan-j-goan-cumberland-county-sheriffs-office-unsworn-falsification-maine-polygraph-examiners-act-tampering-with-public-records\">reported<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">PORTLAND, Maine (WGME) &#8212; New details have been released about a former detective with the Cumberland County Sheriff&#8217;s Office accused of falsifying records while working as a polygraph examiner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fifty-one-year-old Regan Goan is accused of not giving someone a polygraph exam five years ago when they were supposed to receive one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The person was applying for a position at the Cumberland County Jail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Court documents say the person was nervous, and Goan told them, &#8220;You know what, you&#8217;re good, buddy.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Goan had his own polygraph business. Goan is also a former Bridgton police officer and Cumberland County sheriff&#8217;s deputy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He was arrested Friday and charged with unsworn falsification, violating the Maine Polygraph Examiners Act and multiple counts of tampering with public records.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Later the same day, WGME&#8217;s CBS 13 I-Team investigative reporter <a href=\"https:\/\/wgme.com\/station\/people\/dan-lampariello-11-23-2021\">Dan Lampariello<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/wgme.com\/news\/i-team\/former-maine-deputy-accused-of-lying-about-polygraph-exams-had-faced-discipline-before-cumberland-county-sheriffs-office?teaserSource=trending\">reported<\/a> additional details about the case:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">PORTLAND (WGME) &#8212; A former Cumberland County Sheriff&#8217;s Deputy and police officer is accused of lying about conducting polygraph exams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He also faced discipline in the past during his time with Cumberland County.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Regan Goan is facing multiple charges, accused of lying about polygraph exams he was supposed to conduct for the Cumberland County Sheriff&#8217;s Office through his private company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Goan also received reprimands over the years while working as a deputy at that same agency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Goan had worked as a Cumberland County Sheriff&#8217;s Deputy since the mid-1990s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Later, he left to work as an officer in Bridgton and started his own polygraph examination company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s through that company court records allege Goan lied about conducting polygraphs for nine law enforcement officers between 2019 and 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He&#8217;s now facing charges of violating the state&#8217;s Polygraph Examiner Act and tampering with public records.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the CBS13 I-Team has learned Goan was also disciplined multiple times as a deputy for other issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to a copy of his personnel file, there are eight written warnings and reprimands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They include one from 2021, when Goan let his polygraph examiner&#8217;s license expire for more than a year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2019, he was reprimanded for failing to show up to a scene while on call. In that incident, he had to be woken up at his home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That same year, he was also reprimanded for replacing the sim card in his county-issued phone and disabling it, even though the county was still paying for the plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The I-Team also requested Goan&#8217;s personnel file from his time with the Bridgton Police Department, but that is still pending.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The CBS13 I-Team reached out to Goan for comment Tuesday on the charges against him but never heard back.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In view of polygraphy&#8217;s complete <a href=\"https:\/\/antipolygraph.org\/articles\/article-018.shtml\">lack of scientific underpinnings<\/a> and its vulnerability to simple and effective <a href=\"https:\/\/antipolygraph.org\/faq.shtml#q14\">countermeasures<\/a> that anyone can learn, now would be an expedient time for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cumberlandso.org\/index.php\">Cumberland County Sheriff\u2019s Office<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/antipolygraph.org\/blog\/2026\/02\/27\/omaha-police-department-scraps-polygraph-screening\/\">follow the example<\/a> of the Omaha Police Department and <strong>stop using it.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As earlier reported on AntiPolygraph.org, a former Cumberland County, Maine sheriff\u2019s deputy and polygraph operator, Regan J.
