{"id":5020,"date":"2025-03-22T02:29:09","date_gmt":"2025-03-22T07:29:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/antipolygraph.org\/blog\/?p=5020"},"modified":"2025-03-23T06:37:50","modified_gmt":"2025-03-23T11:37:50","slug":"dod-may-use-polygraphs-in-musk-pentagon-visit-leak-investigation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/antipolygraph.org\/blog\/2025\/03\/22\/dod-may-use-polygraphs-in-musk-pentagon-visit-leak-investigation\/","title":{"rendered":"DoD May Use Polygraphs in Musk Pentagon Visit Leak Investigation"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"entry\">\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/antipolygraph.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/dod.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"233\" height=\"233\" src=\"https:\/\/antipolygraph.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/dod.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-542\" srcset=\"https:\/\/antipolygraph.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/dod.jpg 233w, https:\/\/antipolygraph.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/dod-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 233px) 100vw, 233px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following a Thursday, 20 March 2025 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/20\/us\/politics\/musk-pentagon-briefing-china-war-plan.html\">report<\/a> by the <em>New York Times<\/em> that &#8220;[t]he Pentagon was scheduled on Friday to brief Elon Musk on the U.S. military&#8217;s plan for any war that might break out with China,&#8221; Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth&#8217;s chief of staff, Joseph R. &#8220;Joe&#8221; Kasper on Friday, 21 March signed <a href=\"https:\/\/media.defense.gov\/2025\/Mar\/21\/2003674265\/-1\/-1\/0\/EFFORTS-TO-COMBAT-UNAUTHORIZED-DISCLOSURES-OSD002809-25-RES-FINAL.PDF\">a memorandum<\/a> announcing the beginning of an investigation &#8220;into unauthorized disclosures&#8221; and seeking support from the Director for Defense Intelligence (Counterintelligence, Law Enforcement, and Security).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kasper&#8217;s memorandum directs that &#8220;The use of polygraphs in the execution of this investigation will be in accordance with applicable law and policy.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The use of polygraphs within the Department of Defense is governed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esd.whs.mil\/Portals\/54\/Documents\/DD\/issuances\/dodi\/521091p.pdf?ver=2019-04-22-104603-167\">Department of Defense Instruction 5210.91<\/a> &#8220;Polygraph and Credibility Assessment (PCA) Procedures,&#8221; Enclosure 4, para. 1.a.(2) of which authorizes the use of polygraphs in counterintelligence investigations when &#8220;[t]here is a suspected unauthorized disclosure of defense information, national intelligence, or indications of treason, spying, espionage, sabotage, subversion, or terrorism.&#8221; It does not specifically mention speaking with journalists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It should be noted that there is no documented instance of the polygraph ever solving a federal leak investigation.
