The Associated Press <a title=\"2 charged with murder of 5 teens missing since '78\" href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/hostednews\/ap\/article\/ALeqM5gBCpUamOSKewbT11l9dRC3OKia-AD9EK56F80\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reports<\/a> that Evans had earlier been eliminated as a suspect after passing a polygraph test:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The boys, Melvin Pittman and Ernest Taylor, who were both 17, and Alvin Turner, Randy Johnson, and Michael McDowell, who were all 16, were last seen on a busy street near a park where they had played basketball on Aug. 20, 1978. They were with a carpenter, Lee Evans, who routinely hired teens to help him with odd jobs, police have said.<\/p>\n<p>Evans told police at the time that he dropped off the boys on a street corner near an ice cream parlor. Later that night, Michael McDowell returned home and changed clothes, then returned to a waiting pickup truck with at least one other boy inside. That was the last confirmed sighting of any of the teens.<\/p>\n<p>Evans was repeatedly interviewed in the months after the disappearances but passed a polygraph examination and was cleared as a suspect.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If Evans is indeed guilty of killing the &#8220;Clinton Avenue Five,&#8221; then this is yet another case where misplaced reliance on the pseudoscience of polygraphy led to investigatorial misdirection. Such cases include those of &#8220;Green River Killer&#8221;\u00a0<a title=\"Gary Leon Ridgway, Deadliest Serial Killer in U.S. History, Passed Polygraph and Killed Again\" href=\"https:\/\/antipolygraph.org\/cgi-bin\/forums\/YaBB.pl?num=1067927512\">Gary Leon Ridgway<\/a>, &#8220;Woodchipper Killer&#8221; <a title=\"Woodchipper Killer Richard Crafts Passed Polygraph\" href=\"https:\/\/antipolygraph.org\/cgi-bin\/forums\/YaBB.pl?num=1164610421\">Richard Crafts<\/a>, &#8220;Angel of Death&#8221; <a title=\"'Angel of Death' Charles Cullen Passed Polygraph\" href=\"https:\/\/antipolygraph.org\/cgi-bin\/forums\/YaBB.pl?num=1141319916\">Charles Cullen<\/a>, and <a title=\"The Crystallynn Girard Murder Case: Yet Another Failure of the Polygraph\" href=\"https:\/\/antipolygraph.org\/cgi-bin\/forums\/YaBB.pl?num=1209539000\">Dennis Donohue<\/a>, the likely killer of Buffalo, New York teenager Crystallynn Girard. All passed polygraphs regarding their crimes.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Update:<\/span><\/strong> The Newark <em>Star-Ledger<\/em> <a title=\"Authorities announce arrests in Newark murders of five teens nearly 32 years ago\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nj.com\/news\/index.ssf\/2010\/03\/police_announce_arrests_in_kil.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reports<\/a> that the second man arrested was Lee Evans&#8217;s cousin, Philander Hampton, 53, of Jersey City.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Update (7 June 2022):<\/strong><\/span> In November 2011, the <em>New York Times<\/em> <a href=\"_wp_link_placeholder\" data-wplink-edit=\"true\">reported<\/a> that a jury found Lee Anthony Evans not guilty on all charges.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WCBS TV reports that Lee Evans, an early suspect in the 1978 disappearance of five Newark, New Jersey teenagers, has been arrested for their murder along with another as-yet-unidentified man.
