{"id":3531,"date":"2002-05-21T15:30:56","date_gmt":"2002-05-21T20:30:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/antipolygraph.org\/blog\/?p=3531"},"modified":"2021-02-23T02:51:20","modified_gmt":"2021-02-23T07:51:20","slug":"police-drop-polygraph-as-hiring-tool","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/antipolygraph.org\/blog\/2002\/05\/21\/police-drop-polygraph-as-hiring-tool\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Police Drop Polygraph as Hiring Tool&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"entry\">\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gloria Campisi <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20020613055452\/http:\/\/www.philly.com\/mld\/philly\/news\/local\/3304851.htm\">reports<\/a> for the Philadelphia <em>Daily News.<\/em> Excerpt:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>The Philadelphia Police Department is scrapping the polygraph test as a hiring tool.<\/p><p>Police Commissioner Sylvester Johnson said yesterday more intensive background checks would replace the lie detector test, which has been in use here for more than 20 years.<\/p><p>The action was hailed by a police union official who called the lie tests as reliable as &#8220;tarot cards and ouija boards.&#8221;<\/p><p>Johnson said Philadelphia was the only large city still using the controversial tests, required for admission to the Police Academy.<\/p><p>Once in the academy, some recruits who passed the lie tests have been determined to have been involved in illegal activities that would bar them from the force, he said.<\/p><p>In a lawsuit filed in the late 1980s challenging the tests, American Civil Liberties Union official Barry Steinhardt said people turned down for the police force because of negative polygraph results numbered &#8220;in the hundreds, and probably more than 1,000.&#8221;<\/p><p>The test reportedly relies heavily on questions about drug or alcohol use and personal matters.<\/p><p>Rich Costello, president of Lodge 5 of the Fraternal Order of Police, the police union, hailed Johnson&#8217;s action, calling the tests &#8220;inherently unreliable.&#8221;<\/p><p>&#8220;An awful lot of people are not officers today [because of] this toy,&#8221; Costello said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Philadelphia Police Commissioner Sylvester Johnson has taken a courageous step in scrapping polygraph screening. Unfortunately, Philadelphia was not the only large city still using polygraph screening.
