{"id":2828,"date":"2000-12-05T15:00:53","date_gmt":"2000-12-05T20:00:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/antipolygraph.org\/blog\/?p=2828"},"modified":"2021-02-16T05:19:21","modified_gmt":"2021-02-16T10:19:21","slug":"860000-doe-study-to-evaluate-polygraphs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/antipolygraph.org\/blog\/2000\/12\/05\/860000-doe-study-to-evaluate-polygraphs\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;$860,000 DOE Study to Evaluate Polygraphs&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"entry\">\n\n\n<p>Jennifer McKee of the <em>Albuquerque Journal<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/fas.org\/sgp\/news\/2000\/12\/aj120500.html\">writes<\/a> in part:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>The Department of Energy intends to sink almost a million dollars into an upcoming study to determine &#8211; once and for all &#8211; how well widespread lie detector tests work in preventing espionage.<\/p><p>&#8220;While we must take the utmost precaution in protecting the nation&#8217;s secrets with all prudent measures at our disposal, we must also protect the science at our national labs as well as the scientists who work there,&#8221; said Secretary of Energy Bill Richardson in a prepared statement Monday.<\/p><p>&#8220;The employees deserve reasonable assurance that the polygraph tests to which they are subject provide accurate results.&#8221;<\/p><p>The DOE requested the study, which will be conducted over the next 18 months by the National Academy of Sciences at a cost of $860,000, according to Sen. Jeff Bingaman, D-N.M. and the ranking Democrat on the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee.
